Bargain basement price of $3.82 (as opposed to $3.99) at Amazon. Why? Dunno. Maybe they have an oversupply of electrons and decided to whittle the amount accordingly.

This is your chance to venture into the ghostly world of Wisdom Court, where women go to pursue their dreams.

weenmess

Well, here we are, stuck with the mess. It was a good party, though, right? I enjoyed “31 Days of Spooky Stuff,” though there were a couple of days when my brain was very much like an empty vat. I learned I can write about stuff–or find a good piece someone else will share–even with a dreadful virus dragging me down, always a useful bit of knowledge to have. And, best thing ever, I had six people commenting on various posts–a record for me. You’re all wonderful, highly intelligent and sensitive to the Halloween zeitgeist. It was fun.

I put your six names on small pieces of paper and dropped them into a bowl. After much shaking and mixing, I pulled out a name: Christine Valentor! Yes, the author of Halloween Jack, published on Day 21. Now, considering that Christine ended up being the author of a piece for “31 Days,” my panel of judge said I should consider pulling another name. Why? To allow for a winner who was solely a commenter. (The panel of judge has firm ideas. Commenters are highly valued here at Writer in the Garret.) I closed my eyes, pulled out a piece of paper, and read the name: Shyla Fairfax-Owen!

So, we have two winners! That’s the good news. The bad news is that while I’ve had my fingers crossed for weeks, I’m still waiting for the third book to be finished by my publishers. They have promised early November. Since the third book, All In Bad Time, is being published as both an e-book and a trade-paperback, I’m a little fuzzy on the exact date I can get the paperback to the winners.

Here’s my question, winners. Do you want me to send you the first two Wisdom Court books now? I can easily do that, and then send the third as soon as it arrives. If you’d rather wait to receive all three at once, that’s fine, too. All you have to do is give me your postal addresses at my email: yvonne.montgomery@gmail.com and let me know your preference. Your wish is my command!

To the rest of you, I will let you know ASAP when I find out the publication date for All In Bad Time. I’m hoping we’ll start out with reduced prices as the book is launched, or possibly lower prices for the other two. I will let you know what the plan is. (I will also beg and plead for all of you to write reviews for my books, which will make my panel of judge happy.) Thank you all so much for getting into the spirit of “31 Days…” I hope you’ve had as much fun as I have.

Happy November! It’s going to feel weird not writing a post about Halloween tomorrow. Maybe I’ll write one about something else. We’ll see.

Did I mention I got to write “The End?”

ebooks, shadows, writing process

Although, as we know, we never really reach the end. And so I’m zipping through the manuscript of A Signal Shown, Book Two of the Wisdom Court series, adding a bit here and there so I can get it off to my beta readers. As I finished on page 301, I let out a deep breath and thought about heading to the refrigerator for the bottle of champagne I put there several days ago. I never pass up a chance to click champagne glasses because they’re not always frequent, those celebratory writing moments.

As soon as I have feedback from the readers I’ll make one more pass through the prose and then submit the book for eformatting at ePublishingWorks!. They’ve done such good work with my two mysteries Scavenger Hunt and Obstacle Course. As soon as the new book is ready, the first Wisdom Court book, Edge of the Shadow, along with A Signal Shown, will be epublished. And how will I greet that frabjous day? By telling the world about my wonderful books and–oh yeah–by plugging away on the third Wisdom Court book, All in Bad Time. You have to be true to the story arc.

So, my friends, here’s a sample from Wisdom Court Book One, my first metaphysical thriller, Edge of the Shadow:

“Mistletoe to break the lock.” The woman seated at the small table sprinkled leaves into the shallow bowl next to the candle illuminating the room.

The windows at her back were closed and curtained but the flame fluttered, deepening the red of her upswept hair and gleaming along the silver threads in her robe. Her gaze darted toward the gloom in the corners as she reached into another bag.

“I call upon the spirits.” Spiky thistle leaves fell to the pottery surface. Groping inside a leather pouch she pulled out dry needles. They dropped from her hand as she whispered, “Yew to raise the dead.”

A gauzy sack yielded graying fronds. “Balm of Gilead, manifest the one I seek.”

After a glance down at the ancient book open across her lap she murmured, “Protection born of amaranth. And borage for courage,” she added under her breath, releasing the last bits into the container.

Shadows stirred along the wall as she twisted the candle from the saucer and held it to the herbal mixture, taking care to push her flowing sleeve away from the dish. Pungent smoke drifted upward as she replaced the taper.

A breath of air touched her and she turned, half-glimpsing motion but unable to find its source. Again the flame wobbled, and behind her the curtain billowed upward. The border of the coarsely woven material brushed the wick as it fell back into place.

A tiny spark gnawed along the threads until it burned.

And that’s The End for today. Cheers!

Book One

Greetings, gentle readers.  As promised, my two mysteries, Scavenger Hunt and Obstacle Course, are now available at the Kindle Books section of Amazon.com.  And if i can figure out how to do it, I’ll show you the covers … Look!  I figured out how to do it!

These are the first books I published, set in the Capitol Hill section of Denver, starring Finny Aletter, a stockbroker who’s decided to take the carpentry skills she’s acquired while restoring her own century-old house and use them to build a new career for herself.  Before she can exit gracefully, her boss and former lover is murdered, and Finny finds herself at the top of the suspects list.  If she can’t convince Denver Police Detective Chris Barelli she’s innocent, she’ll never get to find out if it’s fear or attraction making her heart beat faster whenever he shows up.  And if she can’t discover if a rumored manuscript actually exists, she’ll never escape the world of scavengers.

Obstacle Course finds Finny launching her her house restoration career at a chi-chi party among Denver’s upper-crust but the celebration turns grim when a controversial judge is murdered.  Finny puts carpentry aside for detection when her patron and friend, Twee Garrett, becomes the prime suspect.  Finny’s introduction to the Denver social whirl becomes a fight for survival as she navigates the roadblocks of secrets and lies between her and the truth.

I had fun going through the books again, and I hope you will, too.  If you’d be kind enough to review them, I’ll love you forever.  The books will be coming out at BN, iBooks, and Kobo, as well as Sony, Ingram, and Overdrive over the next couple of months.
