31 Days of Spooky Stuff, October 13: A favorite episode of The X-Files

I don’t know how much influence The X-Files has had on me, but it’s been significant. I’m grateful it aired when I was an adult, both because I was able to clue into most of the cultural references of its best writers, and because, growing up, I had enough nightmares as it was.

I started to write this post about the five scariest episodes of The X-Files, but ran into a problem I’m not willing to resolve. All the lists point to “Home” as either one of or the most frightening episode of the series. After seeing the preview of that episode back in 1995, I refused to watch it. (I have a deep and ongoing problem with monsters under the bed.)

clydeb2So today I’ll remind you of one of the very best of the frightening standalone episodes the series had: “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose,” about a psychic whose gift is the ability to see how people will die. The late Peter Boyle played this character with grace and melancholy, and the writing and directon by Darin Morgan and David Nutter are both creepy and morbidly humorous. It remains one of the most human of the series episodes–what, after all, is more human than death?

When I recall watching this episode, I remember the joy I felt at the skill of the writing, at the brilliance of Boyle’s portrayal. It’s been a favorite “ahhh” moment in my long history of TV-watching.

Avoiding writing, Character, writing process

Stick to  your writing today. I know you’re afraid of the plot intricacies in the WIP, All In Bad Time, tearing your hair out because incorporating the first two books of the  trilogy into this third book is exacting and frustrating. You can do it. Just plunge ahead with the action. If you don’t like it when you read it over, you can change it. You’re the goddess at Wisdom Court.

(Easy for you to say. Why the hell did I create so many characters? What possessed me to think I could manage them? By their natures they’re independent, contrary–well, some of them. They keep doing things I hadn’t planned, saying things I didn’t know they thought. WTF?)

This always happens when you write. The characters start coming to life, and once they do, they want to help shape the narrative.

(Right now the narrative looks like that old joke about a blind man describing an elephant.)

Come on, stop whining. Imagine you’re walking through a forest and the goal is to get to the other side. You don’t stop to hear the birds sing, nor to marvel at the fungi. And stop trying to find that bubbling spring to drink from! Just keep going. That means you have to quit noodling around with this blog post.

(Crap. You’re right. I’m sitting here. My fingers are on the keys. It’s time to write. Thanks, I guess.)

You’re welcome. One question: why did you pick a youngish blonde woman for the graphic?

(She reminded me of J.K. Rowling. Not a bad example to have in mind, right?)

Get to work!

Character, RMFW, Spock, writers conference

It’s been too long since I’ve posted, but that’s because things have been moving along.  I’ve actually begun the process toward digitizing my mysteries, Scavengers and Obstacle Course.  I’ve sent money and everything.  It should take about three weeks and a little longer for the second, and then I’ll start through the learning curve of getting them both up on sites, such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

I’ve also decided to make one more attempt to get my first Wisdom Court book, Edge of the Shadow, in front of a publisher.  I’d just about decided to self-publish, but after the excellent panels at the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers Colorado Gold Conference, I thought that, before I start my own business, which is what self-publishing would be, I’ll give it another shot.  Writing time is at a premium anyway without adding more stuff I’d rather someone else do.  Like publish my book(s).   So, into the breach, my hearties, more polishing, queries, synopses–the activities that build my character (no, not characters, character.)  Have I mentioned how many additions I have on the structure that is my character?  I’ll write a tone poem about it some day.

As for now, since I’m getting sleepy, I will send my best hopes to all you writers out there.  May your manuscripts glow with the care you’ve given them, may agents and publishers wonder where you’ve been all their lives.  As a great writer once said, “Live long and prosper.” Surely Spock wrote as well as he did everything else.  (Ack, I’m trying to get my fingers to separate properly.  Oh, the hell with it.)

Good night.
